Releasing the potential of the Northern Powerhouse local wind supply chain
Following significant investment into the offshore wind industry, including the announcement of six new offshore wind projects off the coast of Northern England, that will result in the creation of thousands of jobs in manufacturing, project development, construction and operations, Xodus has launched a survey that aims to create a database of Northern English companies involved in the growing renewables sector.
The responses from the survey will be used to assist and inform strategic planning across the Northern Powerhouse (NPH) regions (North East, North West, Yorkshire & Humberside), to maximise the sector potential both within the UK and in overseas markets through the Department for International Trade (DIT) UK and overseas officers.
Working in collaboration with the NPH regions at the Department for International Trade, Xodus is developing a supplier database that will make it easier for companies within the northern offshore wind supply chain to showcase their capabilities to developers and in turn, create opportunities for new work.
Victoria Gemmill, of the DIT Northern Powerhouse Regional Team, explained: “Recent announcements offer a major boost for the UK’s green economy. Not only that, but the projects bring huge potential to create new jobs and deliver green and affordable energy to millions of homes. It’s an exciting time to get involved in the sector, and local companies are well positioned to supply projects at home and overseas, with significant interest overseas in the UK expertise and capability.”
Working on behalf of DIT, Xodus is interested in hearing from companies that believe that their offshore wind sector products and services have strong export potential. By promoting the capabilities and specialist expertise that northern companies can offer to overseas markets, it is hoping that the UK, and in particular Northern England, will benefit from export opportunities.
This framework forms a major part of the government’s industrial strategy, building on Northern England’s strong economy and helping businesses up and down the country seize their opportunities.
“In recent years, the UK has led the charge in offshore wind, proudly boasting some of the best offshore wind resources in the world,” added Victoria.
“There is a clear commitment from government and industry to continue investing in the low carbon economy – bolstered by the Prime Minister’s ambitious target to quadruple the UK’s offshore wind capacity to produce 40GW of energy from offshore wind by 2030 – enough to power every home in the country.
“UK projects want UK suppliers, and this survey is an easy step for offshore wind companies to effectively announce their capabilities and interest.”
The online survey has been emailed to targeted companies across the North West, North East Yorks, Humber and Lincolnshire. If you are based in the North of England and are involved in the offshore wind sector, please check your email for the survey link.
If you have not been contacted, but feel you this survey applies to you, please complete the survey available here.
The survey is open to responses until 18:00 on Wednesday 28th April.
